David S. Nolan, Ph.D.
Dave Nolan grew up on or around Navy bases until his family settled in Key West, Florida. After four years at Phillips Exeter Academy, he spent 9 years at Harvard University, earning a B.A. in Physics and a Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Sciences. After research positions at UC Berkeley, Colorado State, and Princeton, he became a professor at the University of Miami, where he has worked for over 20 years. He has taught classes on Atmospheric Dynamics, Weather Analysis, the General Circulation of the Atmosphere, and Vortex Dynamics. He has over 100 peer-reviewed papers on research topics such as hurricanes, tornadoes, tropical meteorology, and waves in the atmosphere.
Consulting Experience
Dr. David Nolan has been providing expertise as a meteorological consultant or expert witness since 2008. He has worked as an expert witness on over 40 legal cases, for both defendants and plaintiffs, and he has given testimony in six depositions and two trials. He has also provided expertise to reinsurance companies on atmospheric modeling, their risk models, and trends in hurricane activity. Dr. Nolan can acquire, analyze, and synthesize past weather data from surface observations, radar data, and local weather reports to provide the best possible estimate of wind speeds, rainfall rates, and weather conditions at the locations and periods of interest.
For a typical case, Dr. Nolan will require a retainer equivalent to 4 or more hours of time, depending on the scope of the case. After an initial analysis, he will provide preliminary findings and recommendations. Thereafter work, travel, and testimony will be billed on an hourly basis.
